What is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional Intelligence is a set of emotional and social skills that impact how we feel and behave with others. People with high emotional intelligence are perceived as approachable and empathetic. Like cognitive intelligence, emotional intelligence and can be learned and developed, with the right tools and support.

There are 5 distinct components of EQ

Self-awareness

The confidence and clarity that comes from knowing who you are at your core.

Self-regulation

The ability to stay calm and rational under stress and conflict, rather than blowing up.

Internal motivation

Finding fulfillment in the process without the expectation of reward or recognition.

Empathy

The ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

Social Skills

The ability to interact and communicate effectively with others.

What happens when there is a lack of emotional intelligence in teams?

In highly technical industries, it is common for companies to recruit highly (cognitively) intelligent individuals, lacking the appropriate emotional skillset to thrive as a team.

Workplaces/individuals could experience things like:

  • The inability to manage conflict and difficult conversations professionally, including outbursts of emotion.
  • High turn-over of staff and lack of loyalty, because of a poor company culture.
  • Mistrust between team members, with everyone questioning each other’s motivations.
  • People feeling scared to speak up and communicate ideas
  • Feelings of being undervalued, powerless or disillusioned.
  • Individuals becoming stressed, burnt-out and overwhelmed with the workload.

Looking to grow your or your team’s emotional intelligence?

It all begins through self-awareness, so you can understand your emotional landscape. Do you know your own emotional strengths and weaknesses? Oftentimes, we can’t see our blind spots — the area of emotional intelligence we may not be actively using, which are impacting our work and life.

Our process starts with a comprehensive emotional intelligence assessment. We (Julia and Mat) are Certified MHS EQ-i 2.0 Providers. These assessments have been rigorously tested to ensure their validity over almost 20 years. Organizations trust the science that underpins the assessments to predict and improve job performance and leadership competencies.

The EQ-i 2.0 Assessments review individuals based on the following 15 areas

Did you know?

Any strength overplayed can also become a liability.

For example, a person who scores really high on optimism often is not using many skills in reality testing (the ability to see a situation for what it really is, rather than what one hopes or fears it might be). Once you understand your unique results, you can look to balance your skills.

OPTIONS For LEADERS

OPTIONS For INDIVIDUALS

OPTIONS For LEADERS

EQ Leadership Report

Very effective leaders have very high scores in certain areas of emotional intelligence. If you are in a leadership/management position and would like to become more well-rounded, this is for you.

The EQ Leadership report’s language differs from the standard report in that it focuses on managing and being responsible for other people. The results of your assessment will be measured against other top-level leaders, so you can see where you are excelling and what areas you need to work on.

EQ Leadership 360

The EQ Leadership 360 takes all the elements of the standard leadership report but deepens the experience further by receiving insights from those who work with you and know you personally.

Allowing for unlimited raters (Managers, Peers, Direct Reports, Friends, and Family), these observer ratings are compared with the self-assessment in order to provide you with a 360-degree view of your effectiveness. We all have blind spots. Allowing others to anonymously review you helps you see yourself from new perspectives.

OPTIONS For INDIVIDUALS

EQ i 2.0 Report

The EQ I 2.0 report is designed to be used in work settings for an individual at a non-management level. This report is perfect for people who have a desire to grow and work better in a team environment.

If you would like to grow your communication skills, develop better relationships with those at your level and with your manager(s), stay calm under work pressure and during meetings and presentations, this assessment will help you. You will be measured against others at an individual level.
